Mia awoke to the smell of coffee. The scent filled her senses, pulling her to a conscious state. She took a deep breath and stretched. The dull ache in her body reminded her of last night. The steam from the coffee maker hissed.

Mmm… coffee. She jolted upright, her eyes darting around the room. Wait. Who made coffee? She pulled the covers up to her neck.

“Hello? Is anyone here?” She jumped at the knock on the door.

“Miss Starr, it’s Detective Gonela. Is everything okay?”

She heard the voice through the door and hurried over to it, cracking it just enough to peek.

“Have you been in my apartment, Detective?”

“No. Is everything okay?” he asked, looking alert and ready to break down the door if needed.

Mia looked behind her and inspected the room. Her eyes fell upon a note that was wedged between the salt and peppershaker on the table.

“Yep, everything’s okay. Thank you.” She shut the door, went straight for the note, and stared down at it. Coffee first. As she filled her mug with caffeine, her eyes strayed to her discarded clothes on the floor. She sat her mug on the counter and went to the scattered clothes. It drove her crazy to see things out of place.

When she picked up her jeans, she noticed a lump in the pocket. She pulled out the torn piece of shirt from last night, and the tip of her fingers grazed across something hard. Fumbling around inside the pocket, she closed her fingers around the object and pulled out a small piece of red rock. She rolled the piece of brick between her fingers, smiling at its rough edges. When did he put this in my pocket? A lot happened last night, but she couldn’t place when he’d slipped it in.

She hurried over to the note. Her eyes scanned the paper. “You need to be at this address downtown at seven p.m. You can’t miss the building—it’s twenty-one stories with dark, tinted windows. It’s known as The Darth Vader building. Go to the eighteenth floor and give your name at the receptionist desk. Wait for me. I’ll be there. I left something in your pocket last night when we were in the graveyard. You gave me your trust—remember that. Cole.”

She sat down on the couch sipping her coffee as she dialed her mom’s number.

“Mom, I need to talk to you. In person. Something weird happened last night.”

“Something different, other than your day-to-day weirdness?” her mother asked, laughing into the phone.

Mia sighed. “Yes, Mother. Something very unusual.”

“I see. I’ll be there tomorrow. I’ll stop by on the way to the doctor’s.”

“Great, I’ll have your favorite coffee creamer ready.” She was excited. Even if she knew the conversation would be weird, she missed her mom.

“Mia, you’re not going to like what I’m gonna tell you.” Her mom’s taunting tone only confirmed that she was taking joy in this already.

“Mom, it can’t be any worse than what’s going on right now.” Mia held the phone away from her ear as her mom’s laughter vibrated the speaker.
